About the Project

Reconnecting two communities is at the core of the proposal, Illuminated Passages: Turning Barriers into Gateways on the Near East Side. The project uses artful illumination to beautify an existing railway underpass in efforts to increase safety for pedestrians – providing better access to neighborhood parks and amenities – and in doing so better connect neighborhoods and neighbors of Woodland Park and Eastgate. The tunnel will serve as a place to celebrate various holidays or neighborhood pride (through modified color schemes), be a site for community clean-ups, and a backdrop to a neighborhood block party at completion.
